Are You Ready, Kids? New SpongeBob SquarePants Gameplay Footage Revealed

After its announcement last year, we have been eagerly awaiting updates on Purple Lamp Studio’s SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. While we are still without any sign of a release date (guess the mail must be slow out of Bikini Bottom), we have now received the first look at some gameplay footage.

Showcased at Gamescom today, the level that we see being played is set in the Wild West Jellyfish Fields — one of the seven worlds that you will be able to explore in the game. (Thanks to Nintendo Everything for sharing the footage.) And, much like the very enjoyable SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated — which we gave a 7/10 in our review — this 3D platformer puts SpongeBob on a McGuffin hunt around a Wild West setting, tapping cacti and dispatching troublesome jellyfish.

What is great to see in the gameplay is the authentic voice cast, which collects original show members including Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown and more, giving them a whole new script and original story to work with.

It is worth bearing in mind that the above footage is captured from the PC version of the game so the Switch release may potentially look and run a little different That being said, the gameplay looks remarkably similar to Battle For Bikini Bottom’s own, so the differences may not be too jarring.

For a sense of what else the game has to offer, check out the following list of fishy features that you will find in SpongeBob’s upcoming deep-sea adventure:

– Unlock classic and new platforming skills like the Fishhook Swing and Karate Kick
– Don more than 30 F.U.N.tastic costumes like SnailBob and SpongeGar
– Travel to 7 distinct Wishworlds like Wild West Jellyfish Fields and Halloween Rock Bottom
– Experience all the buddy movie banter with SpongeBob’s permanent companion Balloon-Patrick
– Meet all your favourite Bikini Bottomites from the series, voiced by their original actors
– Enjoy the in-game soundtrack featuring 101 songs from the series, including Sweet Victory

We will be keeping an eye out for any news of a Cosmic Shake release date. Considering the state of the gameplay footage, we would imagine that this news will come sooner rather than later.
