- She spent her initial years growing up in Shahabad near Gulbarga and she was 4 years old when her family shifted to Madras.
- Initially, Gayatri Jayaraman wanted to pursue a career in medicine but despite gaining 94% in board exams, she was unable to secure a medical seat.
- In October 1997, she won the Miss Tamil Nadu title and won the Miss South India title the following year.
- Even after she started her pursuits in the entertainment industry, Gayatri continued her studies and once stated that “the average life of an actress on screen is maximum four years” and that “she can always return to physiotherapy once my career as an actress is over”.
- In 2001, she made her first film appearance by playing the titular role of Neela, a nomadic folk singer who belongs to the “Neelagararu” tribe, in the Kannada drama film Neela. This performance won her the Cinema Express Award in the “Best Actress” category.
