Holger Rune withdraws from Madrid Open due to fixture clash
Holger Rune is scheduled to play his quarter-final in Munich tomorrow while the qualification rounds in Madrid start a day later on Saturday
Denmarkโs star player, Holger Rune has officially announced on social media that he is set to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to a fixture clash with the ongoing tournament in Munich. Rune defeated top seed Alexander Zverev to set up a quarter-final clash against Emil Ruusuvuori, scheduled for tomorrow which means he wonโt be able to make it in time for the qualifying phase of Madrid Open which starts on Saturday.
This is a rare scenario where a player has to withdraw due to a fixture clash with the succeeding tournament and has raised questions about ATPโs scheduling and calendar.
Holder Rune meanwhile, played the match of his career yesterday, pulling off a sensational win against top seed and World No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Rune defeated Zverev comprehensively in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The unseeded teenager showed no signs of nervousness playing against a much superior side and the home favourite with the whole crowd in Munich backing Zverev. Rune has now given himself an outside chance to go all the way and clinch the Bavarian International title.
