Joel Embiid Facts

  1. Joel used to play both volleyball and soccer in his childhood and had held ambitions of playing professional volleyball in Europe. He had taken to basketball only at the age of 15 and was discovered at a basketball camp by Luc Mbah a Moute, a Cameroonian professional basketball player who has represented the Houston Rockets in the NBA.
  2. About a year later, Joel had moved to the United States to pursue a career in basketball. In his high school senior year, he had led The Rock School‘s basketball team to a 33–4 win-loss record and the state championship.
  3. In February 2014, he had been named one of the 30 finalists for the ‘Naismith College Player of the Year’ award, an annual basketball honor given to the top men’s and women’s collegiate basketball players in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
  4. He had suffered a stress fracture in his back in March 2014 and had missed that year’s Big 12 and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) tournaments. In June 2014, he had undergone surgery on a broken navicular bone in his right foot and was ruled out of action for 4-6 months.
  5. About a month later, he was selected 3rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1st round of the 2014 NBA Draft, thus becoming just the 3rd Cameroonian-born NBA player after Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Luc Mbah a Moute.
  6. In August 2014, he had signed his rookie scale contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he was later ruled out of playing any part in the 2014–15 season due to the broken navicular bone in his foot. In June 2015, a CT scan had revealed that his foot was healing at a much slower rate than expected. He then underwent a 2nd round of surgery on his foot in August 2015 due to which he would miss the entire 2015–16 season as well.
  7. After injuries had delayed his NBA debut for two seasons, he was named to the ‘NBA All-Rookie First Team’ for the 2016–17 season despite playing only 31 games.
  8. He has nicknamed himself ‘The Process’ in a jovial response to a refrain from fans to ‘trust the process’ during Sam Hinkie’s era (2013-2016) as the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers.
  9. A polyglot, he is fluent in English, French, and Basaa (a Bantu language spoken by about 300,000 people in the Central and Littoral regions of Cameroon).
  10. In March 2021, he had announced that he would donate USD 100k, his winnings from the 2021 ‘NBA All-Star Game’, to multiple homeless shelter organizations in Philadelphia. His team, the Philadelphia 76ers, had then announced that they would match his contribution and donate it to the same organizations.
  11. He is a teetotaler.
