National Nurse Day in the United States

On the second Monday of May every year, we celebrate National Nurse Day. It is a day of gratitude for all those who serve in the nursing profession, as well as a day to honor nurses’ personal and professional accomplishments. In keeping with the spirit of National Nurse Day, we are also beginning the countdown to the next National Nurse Day, which happens to fall on the very next month. By reading this article you will learn some interesting facts about the National Nurse Day and the upcoming Nursing Appreciation Month.

In the early days, National Nurse Day was calling Nurses’ Day. But, later on, the name was changed to something more indicative of the spirit of the day – National Volunteer Week. On that day, May 15th, many hospitals, clinics and organizations held fundraising activities for nurses who serve in areas of community health care. Proceeds from these activities support the nurses and are included in the services and programs designed by the nursing organizations.

The hospitals and other such organizations host ‘Nursery Clean-up Day’. This is an excellent time for moms and dads to visit their favorite nurses. On this day, volunteers from the nursing units get the opportunity to work along with the mothers and meet the new little ones. Nurses play an important role in caring for and helping the children. They form an integral part of the healthcare team which takes care of the child from conception to the end.

If you want to make a difference by taking part in this important event, you can start by volunteering at your local nursing facility. You will be amazed at the things you will find around the nursing facility. From the elderly, to babies and toddlers, to cancer patients, everyone needs the loving care of nurses. In fact, National Nurse Day is not just about nurses. It is an ideal occasion to include all those who have made a difference in the field of nursing.
