Travis Head Facts
- At the 2012 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup, Travis had top-scored (57 runs off 58 balls) in Australia’s opening match in a 6-wicket win against England. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance. In the quarter-final, against Bangladesh, he had starred with the ball (3/30 in 7 overs) to limit the opposition to a total of 171 runs. Australia went on to win the match by 5 wickets. He had also captained South Australia to the title at the 2012–13 National Under-19 Championships and was named the ‘Player of the Championship’ for the 2nd successive year.
- In January 2013, soon after South Australia’s Sheffield Shield (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia) win against Victoria, he had been hit by a car outside a hotel in Adelaide and had sustained injuries to his head and back. Miraculously, he had made a full recovery soon enough to be able to compete in South Australia’s next match.
- In February 2015, he was named the captain of South Australia, at the age of just 21. He had become the youngest captain of South Australia in the team’s 122-year first-class history.
- At the beginning of the 2015–16 season, he had become just the 3rd Australian in history to have scored a double century in a List A match. His astonishing knock of 202 runs off just 120 balls had helped South Australia chase down a massive target of 351 runs with 3 overs to spare.
- On New Year’s Eve that season, he had scored his maiden T20 century, in a BBL match against the Sydney Sixers. This was the first century ever to have been scored by a player representing the Adelaide Strikers. With just 3 overs left in the match, the Strikers had required 51 runs to win the match while Travis had needed 55 runs to reach his century. He had then, quite remarkably, scored 56 runs off those 3 overs to score his century and also win the match with 3 balls to spare, smashing Sean Abbott for 3 consecutive sixes in the last over.
- In the 2015–16 domestic season, he had led South Australia to their first Sheffield Shield final in 20 years. He was named the ‘Sheffield Shield Player of the Year’ for scoring 721 runs and picking 9 wickets during the season.
- In the 2016 English domestic season, in his fourth match for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, he had broken the club record for the highest List A batting partnership, amassing 274 runs for the 3rd wicket with Jack Leaning. He had scored 175 runs off just 139 balls in that match.
- In January 2017, in a bilateral home ODI match against Pakistan, he had scored his maiden ODI century (128 runs off 137 balls) and was involved in a 284-run partnership for the opening wicket with David Warner. It was the then 2nd-highest opening wicket partnership in the history of ODI cricket and, as of February 2024, was the highest partnership for any wicket for Australia in ODI cricket.
- His coming-of-age moment in international cricket was the 2021–22 edition of The Ashes (a biennial test cricket series played between England and Australia). In the first match of the series, he had scored 152 runs off just 148 balls, helping Australia reach a total of 425 runs. He had reached his century off just 85 balls and this was the then fastest test match century recorded at the Gabba, the venue for the match. Australia went on to win the match by 9 wickets and he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.
- He was forced to miss the 4th match of the series in Sydney after testing positive for COVID-19. He had, however, made a full recovery for the 5th match and final match of the series in Hobart and had scored 101 runs off 113 balls in Australia’s first innings total of 303 runs. Australia went on to win the match by 146 runs and he was again named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance. As the highest run-scorer on either side (357 runs in 4 matches), he was also named the ‘Player of the Series’.
