Wang Yan was born in Beijing, the daughter of a Chinese political activist, and later became a doctor. She began to change her name, going from Yan Teng to Wang Yan, and even studied acupuncture, which she claimed had some sort of effect on her career. It is therefore not a real surprise that Wang Yan would make the transition into acting and begin to play Chinese women, including the lead character in Crazy Heart, released in 1998. In this role, Wang Yan would play a Chinese woman, called Lian Shi, who lives with her husband in America. The relationship between Lian Shi and Wang Yan would develop to be romantic, with the pair loving each other, and eventually, it would culminate in marriage.
According to some sources, Wang Yan is not a real Chinese gymnast. However, she did win several titles as a Chinese rhythmic gymnast, aged 32 years old in 1996. She has been married to a Chinese man, and the two have a daughter, named Hua Zhen (a more common name), whom they adopted as their daughter, and later grew to love.
As is normally the case with the Chinese martial arts, the martial art of Wing Chun is also a very popular form of martial arts, attracting students from all over the world. One of these students was Wang Yan, who developed a passion for studying Wing Chun while in college in Portland, Oregon. After graduation, Wang took a job as a fitness instructor at an exercise gym in Washington, D. C., and enrolled in a Tai Chi style training class run by Tong Yen. When this class began, Wang was impressed by how well she accepted to learn Wing Chun, and even dropped out of college to pursue her dream of becoming a world class Wing Chun fighter. While in this class, Wang developed some strong points for developing strength, coordination, speed, and endurance.
