Janet Hill, the mother of Hawks minority owner and Hall of Famer Grant Hill and the wife of former Dallas Cowboys running back and team consultant Calvin Hill, passed away on Saturday. Read on to know what happened to Janet Hill and how did she die.

Janet served as trustee emerita of Duke University from 2006 until last year. Her son starred in the same college before kicking off his decorated 19-year-long career in the NBA. Janet was also the classmate of the former first lady and Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

On Monday night, the Dallas Cowboys announced the unfortunate news of Janet Hill’s passing. Her son Grant Hill confirmed the news on Tuesday evening. Ever since the news broke, social media users are paying tributes to the deceased.


How did Janet Hill die?

Janet Hill passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2024, at the age of 74 years. She was surrounded by her family and loved ones during her final moments. Janet was enjoying her retirement life after resigning as a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees last year.

Although the wise lady was still working as a consultant for multiple firms and struggling with a scary disease. All Duke flags on campus will be lowered through Thursday in Janet Hill’s honor.

Dallas Cowboys announced the news of Janet’s demise and remembered her in a statement available below:

“We are so saddened to learn of the passing of Janet Hill. First and foremost, she was a wonderful grandmother, mother, wife, and a cherished member of the Dallas Cowboys Family,”

Janet was eerily involved with Calvin as the couple worked for the communities together.


What was Janet Hill’s cause of death?

Janet Hill passed away after battling Glioblastoma, a terminally aggressive type of cancer that affects the brain and the spinal cord. She was diagnosed with the disease last year following his retirement from the Duke University board.

Janet was getting treatment for the disease. However, her condition was deteriorating according to his son’s statement. The brave lady had all the determination to fight until her body couldn’t keep up and she passed away this Saturday.

“Over a year ago my mother was diagnosed with Glioblastoma. Just like she’s done with everything in her life, she confronted this brain cancer with tremendous strength, courage & dignity,” Janet’s son, Grant Hill, wrote on Twitter.


Janet Hill Early Life, Career, and Accomplishments

Janet Hill was born in 1947 in New Orleans. She grew up an only child in a segregated city and attended 12 years of Catholic school. She flew alone to Boston to enroll at Wellesley College in 1965 where she was a classmate of Hillary Clinton.

After earning an undergraduate degree at Wellesley College, she graduated from the University of Chicago with a MA degree in Mathematics Education in 1972. She started working as a research mathematician for a consulting firm and taught high school, junior college, and college mathematics.

Janet held numerous roles in her career including maths teacher, mathematician researcher, consultant for multiple firms, leader, and also White House liaison assistant for Clifford Alexander, former secretary of the Army.

She also served on the boards of several firms, including The Wendy’s Company, the Carlyle Group, Dean Foods, Houghton Miffin Company, and more. She was also a trustee at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.

From 2006 to 2021, Janet was a member of the Duke University Board of Trustees. She was set to receive the Duke University Medals for Distinguished Meritorious Service this year which will be rewarded posthumously now.

Grant Hill remembers her mother in an emotional tribute

Janet Hill was a famously strict parent to her only child, Grant Hill. She earned the nickname “the Sergeant” from Grant and his friends. She went on to upgrade it to “the General.”
